PART 3 of 3 : Decoding Subtitles for playback with DivX AVI. (SRT- subtitles)

This is Part 3. Decodeing the subtitle overlays from the VOBs to TEXT based SRT files for use with our AVI. This is an auto/manual process using OCR (Optical Character Recognition) from within Sub Rip to create editable text. The OCR engine will need to be taught the shapes of the letters, numbers and punctuation.

The manual teaching can take some time.

1. Start SubRip.

Start SubRip and from the Options menu deselect "Wake Me Up!".
If you leave the option selected, taking too long to teach will cause the focused window to FLASH!

Click the VOB/DVD Icon or from the File menu open VOB(s).

2. Open VOBs.

In the What to do? window click "Open Dir" and find the VOB files ripped earlier.
Select the first VOB in the sequence - VTS_01_01.VOB. Click Open.

The VOB sequence that contains the complete program will be automatically selected.

3. Infomation.

Note any information given and click OK.

4. Settings - Language ~ Action ~ Start...

Select under Action SubPictures to Text via OCR and the Language stream befor clicking Start.
Character matrix file, "Being There" is not created yet! The default is New File and each DVD will require a new character matrix file. Different languages may use the same Character Matrix Map. Wide and Letterbox are the same for our purpose.

5. Teaching the OCR

This part of Sub Rip demands alot of manual input and takes time.

Befor clicking OK when presented with a New Character, check that you have selected the correct charater.

Check - CAPITAL LETTERS and Bold and Italics and punctuation ~ . : ; " ! ?

......

......

5a. Teaching the OCR

The OCR isn't 100%, so choose the best option. Sometime using two charaters or more.

" may be incorrectly recognised as '. That's OK for us.
ft in the image will need to be ft as 2 charaters.

......

Punctuation - italics and non-italics charaters may have no ideal solution!

......

The italic ":" isn't recognised as a group. Again, supply the best match.
The on screen subtitle in the AVI may be ".... man.:" - That's OK.

5b. Teaching the OCR - Charater Map.

Some characters need the use of the Character Map.

Once the character is found ~ "ç" ~ Copy and Paste!

Click OK after each character is Manually recognised.

6. Complete...

After teaching the OCR engine the program will quickly finnish the rest of the subtitles.

7. Saveing the Subtitle as Sub Rip's own SRT file...

The SRT subtitle file can now be saved. The name of the subtitle file must be the same name given to the AVI file. It should also be saved to the same location for a media player to correctly play back the subs.

example.
Being There.srt - subtitle file
Being There.avi - movie file

VobSub should also be installed to view the subtitles in a media player.

8. Post Processing...

You can also save the Character Matrix Map for later use on other language streams from the same DVD. Also, as an option, open the SRT file in a word processor and check spellings.
