PART 2 of 3 : Compressing "C:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_1.VOB" Sequence and Creating a DivX AVI.

This is Part 2. Converting the VOB sequence of the film to a Compressed AVI. There are two stages to this Part:

Stage 1 is choosing the compression. 15MINS
Stage 2 is the actual process of compression.
3-6HOURS

You can Batch Stage 2 for later processing, once you're happy with the values you give in Stage 1. Stage 2 is best done overnight or when you're not using the PC as there is no user input required.

1. Start Dr DivX.

Start Dr. DivX and click the Video File icon button.

Dr. DivX also has Help and FAQ's to guide you.

2. Select VOB Sequence.

Find the VIDEO_TS folder you ripped the DVD to and select the first VOB in the sequence. The rest of the VOBs in a sequance will automaticlly get processed.

The film or episode may span more than 1 VOB file.
"VTS_01" is the film/episode/program "_1" is the sequence number.
"VTS_02_X" would be a different movie!

3. Confirm VOB Sequence.

All the VOB files that combine to make the movie will be selected. There is no need to remove any. Just click OK.

You can only remove the last VOB(s) of a sequence. To process 1 and 3 you need to Batch. For the whole film - remove none, just click OK.

4. Analyzing VOB Sequence.

Dr. DivX will quickly analyze the input files...

This task shouldn't take more than 5MINs and is usually seconds.

5. Select Audio Stream.

You then have the option of selecting an audio source. Depending on how many Audio Streams are in the VOBs you ripped. You may be given a choice of Tracks from the VOBs of the Input Video (VOBs). Just select the one you want from the drop-down list.

Other and No Audio are not required options for our purpose.

6. Preview Audio Stream.

Once the correct track is chosen you can preview the sound and Boost Audio to increase the volume in the finished AVI.

Do not select Keep original AC3.

7. Output Options.

The default output options will yield very good results, compressing a two hour movie to about 1.4GB, or 2 CD's. A 60% size saving.

You can Force a split output. Select Make.
There are also custom profiles, Choose personal profile and you could select one of the Thekid's profiles.
These setting can be modified later.

8. Review befor Encoding.

Review the setting befor finalizing to the encoding process. Once happy with these settings, click "Encode".

There is no need to adjust any setting. However, there is plenty of scope to customise the output. Click "Modify Settings.
To Batch Encode, select "Defer job for batch encoding".

X. Modify Settings.

Modify any setting to tweak the final output. Reducing the video size and audio bit rate will help reduce the final AVI file size.

Use other compressed films as examples for customizing these settings of video size, bit rates and other variables.
AVIPreview and GSpot are utilities that can help with finding these settings.

10. Encoding - First and Second PASS.

Dr. DivX defaults to "Two PASS" Encoding. Each pass will take some time to complete depending on:
1. PC CPU Speed
2. PC Memory
3. PC Resorces given to encoding
This part of the DVD to CD conversion is best done overnight...

This JPEG shows a 23.976FPS movie encoding at 31.7FPS - This isn't changing the films frame rate, just encoding faster than realtime!
You can calculate the duration of encoding... or just check Time Remaining per PASS.
Batch Encode two movies overnight to save time.
This movie will take 3.5HOURS to encode.

11. Finished!

The movie is now compressed to a DivX CODEC AVI.

Play the movie or close and start decoding the subtitles...
